Best Scheme

Best, which stands for 'Better Engineering, Science, Technology', encompasses a range of educational opportunities created to attract, retain and develop outstanding young engineers. More than 30,000 young people take part in the programme every year, which will provide UK industry with the seed corn for its engineering future.

The Academy will play a leading role in co-ordinating and providing support for the activities of the organisations that deliver the Best schemes. These currently include Young Engineers, Smallpeice Trust Courses, Engineering Education Scheme, Headstart, Year in Industry, the Executive Engineers Programme and the Sainsbury Management Fellowship scheme, all of which have been generously supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. By communicating as part of the Best programme, each scheme will benefit from a clearer and stronger voice in the marketplace.

An interactive website is also under development, which will form the basis of a community of interest for Best scheme participants. It will include promotional material explaining the Best programme, the role of The Academy, an archive of work and a bulletin board. Students will be able to register their interest in keeping in touch; search the archive to determine what other students have done on a particular topic; link with students who have experience with a sponsoring company, or have travelled to a particular area. There will also be a social section, for students to publicise events or arrange social activities.

Overall not only do the individual schemes benefit from the Best model but so do the students, through a combination of higher visibility and improved communication. This should guarantee the continuing success of The Academy's educational mission in this decade and beyond.
