ELA Activities
An Engineering Leadership
Scheme Award can fund numerous courses and
activities. Here are just a handful of examples of
how awardees have utilised their awards.

Amit Mistry
Amit organised a three week visit to Japan, visiting engineering companies such as Horiba Limited, a worldwide instruments and systems company, and working in the Energy Conversion Science Research Department of Kyoto University. Also included was a visit to the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Hirose Fukushima Lab which is one of the world’s leading robotics labs. Amit was able to gain first hand insight into Japanese engineering, practical hands on experience in Kyoto laboratory and to develop his Japanese language skills.
“My engineering visit to Japan was a fantastic learning experience where I was able to develop my language skills and learn about new, developing engineering technologies. Supported by The Royal Academy of Engineering I was able to meet fellow young engineers in Japan and build a network of industrial contact. Without the award I would never have gained such an excellent opportunity, which will undoubtedly benefit my future engineering career.”

Simon Scannell
Simon Scannell completed work placements both in the UK and overseas. His Award enabled him to:
-
Undertake a placement in the New Delhi office of Halcrow Consulting India, working on a hydroelectric project in northern India.
-
Complete a work placement with Halcrow Yolles in Toronto, focusing on the structural analysis of a prestigious high-rise building while also producing a compressive strut design guide.
-
Work for BAE Systems SIGMA in Warton as part of the Aircrew Synthetic Training Aids team for Typhoon.
-
Combine a placement with Halcrow in Argentina working for the Flood Management and Water Management Planning team with Spanish tuition and industrial visits.
“The Engineering Leadership Award gave me the opportunity to combine my love of Engineering with a passion for understanding the world and experiencing new cultures. At first I had no idea what I would be able to achieve with the Award but I soon found that I could dream big and then go on to make it a reality. The work placements and study project I undertook were exciting, challenging and educational, drawing on different aspects of my academic and personal skills.
The Award opened new doors and removed some of the constraints in my life, allowing me to pursue greater development as an Engineer and as a person. The financial side of the Award is an obvious benefit but the other Award holders are some of the most inspirational people I have had the privilege to meet and being in that environment contributed greatly to the feeling that anything is possible if you want to make it happen for yourself.”
